AdeleAdkins was raised by a young single mother living in various working-class areas of London. Adkins enjoyed listening to contemporary pop music while she was young and was learning to play the clarinet and the guitar. However, it wasn't until her early teens, when she began to discover the rhythm and blues vocalist Etta James and other mid-20th-century performers, that she began to think about pursuing a career in music. She was in an institution for secondary education in the visual and performing arts that was funded by the federal government. A friend posted songs Adkins had written on Myspace. After her graduation her music caught the attention of record companies. She was signed in the year 2006 with XL Recordings.
